Google: it's Technology, Philosophy and Future

Google has always fascinated me; always I found it unique & amazing, so I thought to write about its Philosophy, Technology & its Future.
Happy Reading……

Google’s search Technology:

Google is the perfect search engine, its search technology has been evolved up to the best & I hope it will get even better once it includes searching other things, we can only dream about. Google’s search technology depend on following two factors-
* PageRank Technology
* Hypertext-Matching Analysis

The software behind Google's search technology conducts a series of simultaneous calculations requiring only a fraction of a second. Traditional search engines rely heavily on how often a word appears on a web page. Google uses numerous factors including its patented PageRank™ algorithm to examine the entire link structure of the web and determine which pages are most important. It then conducts hypertext-matching analysis to determine which pages are relevant to the specific search being conducted. By combining overall importance and query-specific relevance, Google is able to put the most relevant and reliable results first.

Life of a Google Query:

Future of Google:

Google's innovations don't stop at the desktop. To bring its accurate and speedy search results to users accessing the web through portable devices, Google also pioneered the first wireless search technology for on-the-fly translation of HTML to formats optimized for WAP, i-mode, J-SKY, and EZWeb. Currently, Google provides its wireless technology to numerous market leaders, including AT&T Wireless, Sprint PCS, Nextel, Palm, Handspring, and Vodafone, among others.

Google’s Philosophy:

Google, from its inception works on ten things it found to be true & that is one of the reason I like Google so much.

* Focus on the user and all else will follow.
* It's best to do one thing really, really well.
* Fast is better than slow.
* Democracy on the web works.
* You don't need to be at your desk to need an answer.
* You can make money without doing evil.
* There's always more information out there.
* The need for information crosses all borders.
* You can be serious without a suit.
* Great just isn't good enough.

You can find all these in details here-

NTFS uses more disk space than FAT

Microsoft invented both NTFS and FAT file system
FAT is inherited from MS-DOS and Windows 95/98, while NTFS is inherited from Windows NT4. NTFS is the file system default Windows XP and Vista.

Myth:

People tend to think that NTFS uses more disk space than FAT.

Reality:Reality:

False NTFS does not occupy or use more disk space than FAT.

Explanation:

NTFS:

It is faster than FAT.
It is more secure than FAT (less risk of corruption)
has more features (support for international characters, security settings, auditing, compression, encryption, management of very large files).
NTFS is also more efficient: It manages more free space than FAT, and better optimizes the management of many files.

Just try it:

Take two equally sized partitions, format one in NTFS and the other one FAT and copy files over and verify the size occupied on disk.

E.g. Copying files Active Perl (3972 files, total 66.7 MB) on a 300 MB disk

These files occupy 76 607 488 bytes on a FAT drive.
These files occupy 67 628 032 bytes on a NTFS drive.

If we look at the free disk space 300 MB after copies of files:

238 051 840 bytes free on the NTFS drive.
235 298 816 bytes free on the FAT drive.

Conclusion:
Its recommended that you make use of NTFS than FAT if you really care about optimizing disk space.

Formatting your drive with Fat32

Windows XP normally refuse to format a partition higher than 40 GB with FAT32. however this operation performs properly with NTFS

The solution for this issue is to boot your installation CD and use the Console Recovery by pressing the key “r”. Once the safe mode show C:\> type the following command :

format x: /fs:fat32

Replace the letter x by the partition that you are actually formatting , e.g . partition D:.
Important Notice : Formatting from FAT32 is refused whenever the we type cmd in the run. Another important information is thaty. administrator password is required for formatting under console recovery. If you have forgotten your administrator password, the only solution is to format using a software which enable you to format in FAT32 , e.g , FAT32FORMAT.

Making a backup of your registry

Here below you should two simple methods on how to make a backup and to restore your registry.

Export/ Import

Firstly open your registry editor: click on Start Menu /Run / type in the following command: regedit.

Click on File /Export. Enter File name and select a path. Ensure that the file extension is .reg and in the Export range field select All

Click on save to validate operation.

To restore the registry when using this method, simply click on File/ Import.

This method is quite simple and useful, but if one of the registry keys is modified or deleted, causing your system to fail and you can’t restart your PC, this backup shouldn’t be of any use.

The second method allows you to restore your registry base in case of system failure.

Making a backup and restoring your registry using the Windows Recovery Console

The Recovery Console is accessible from the Windows XP installation CD.

The aim is make a copy of certain files (SYSTEM, SOFTWARE, SAM, SECURITY and DEFAULT) found in the WINDOWS/System32/Config folder

The first step is to create a folder to store the copy of these files (E.g.: C:\ Backup).

Insert the XP installation CD; restart your PC, using your CD Drive as First Boot Device.

After the Installation Files are copied, Windows will ask you whether you want to Install Windows XP or Repair.

Type on the R key to select the repair option.

Go to the line ''on which installation of Windows''

Type 1 and enter your password.

After the command line: C:WINDOWS> enter the following command :

copy C:\Windows\system32\Config\SYSTEM C:\Backup

Type in Exit to quit and restart your PC.

Note that when making changes in the registry it’s important to:
Make a backup of the registry before making any modifications.
Make changes sequentially (one after the other).

Windows Operating Modes

Intro

There are different operating modes in which windows can run. Windows 95/99/ME can be run either in standard mode or in 386 enhanced mode.

To choose which mode you wish to run windows, you just have to type "win" at the DOS prompt and chose the appropriate mode to run windows.

To display mode in which Windows is running, go to “Program Management” and select “About” in the menu.

When Windows start on your computer, it determines what kind of mode to prompt by investigating on its kind of CPU and how much RAM is installed on your computer.

Standard mode

If your Pentium 286 or 386 is equipped with less 2MB of free RAM, windows will automatically start in standard mode.

enhanced 386 mode

If your PC is 386 and equipped with more than 2MB of free RAM, windows starts in 386 enhanced mode.

Count Me Out!

To keep your Google Analytics data pure you should remove all traffic generated by yourself or others that may not be real visitors. For example, if your company has a large call center you should remove the traffic they generate because it will skew your analytics data.

To remove this data we usually use an exclude filter based on IP address, host name or geographic location. While this is effective the results can be a bit ‘broad’. What I mean is you may not want to remove ALL of the traffic from an IP address, host name or geographic location.

Here’s another example. I have a blog (obviously) that I track with Google Analytics and I want to remove all of the traffic I generate. I don’t want to use an exclude filter based on IP address or geographic location because I want to see traffic generated by others in my company and city/state. I only want to exclude the traffic from the computer I am working on.

This technique can also be used if you have a dynamic IP address.

The solution is to create an exclude filter based on another piece of data, more specifically a custom segment. This method isn’t as broad as an exclude filter based on IP, hostname or geographic location. The filter is based on a cookie, which is specific to a computer. Using this method I can eliminate all of the traffic from an individual computer without affecting data created by others.

How to Set it Up

The first step is to set a cookie on your machine that will identify you to Google Analytics. We’re going to use GA’s custom segmentation functionality to do the.

I created a script that will set the GA custom segment cookie on your computer. You can view the source here.

Copy the source and paste it into your favorite editor. Then save the file. For the page to properly display on your website you will need to save it with the correct extension. You should be able to use a .html or .htm extension. It depends on your web server.

Once the file has been saved, upload it to your web server. You may need to use FTP. If you don’t know how to put the file on your web server consult with your web master. You can place the file anywhere on the site.

Then open a browser and type the location of the file in the browser. The page should display as an HTML form. If it displays as text then you probably need to change the file extension.

Enter some text into the text box and click the ‘Create Cookie’ button. The script will set the GA custom segment cookie on your computer and the cookie will have a value of whatever you entered into the text box. Do not use any white spaces or special characters when entering a value for your custom segment. Keep it simple, something like ‘exclude-me’ will work just fine. You should see a confirmation message that the cookie was set correctly.

The next step is to log into your GA account and create an exclude filter based on the value of the custom segment cookie. If you entered ‘exclude_me’ in the form then use ‘exclude_me’ as the value in the filter pattern field. Here are the settings for the exclude filter:

This script works by taking the value you enter in the form and setting it as a custom segment. The great thing about this script is you can place it on your site and then access it from all the computers you work on. Just point a browser to the script, submit the form and all traffic from that machine will be excluded.

Keep in mind that the GA cookies are specific to a domain. So if you want to use this script for multiple websites you need to follow the above process for each domain.

The script is written in JavaScript and has been testing in FireFox 1.5 and IE 6.X.

Google searches for quality not quantity

GOOGLE has plans that will dramatically improve the results of internet news searches, by ranking them according to quality rather than simply by their date and relevance to search terms.

The ambitious system is revealed by patents filed in the US and around the world (WO 2005/029368) by researchers based at the company's headquarters in Mountain View, California.

At the moment the company's search engine throws up thousands of "hits" in response to simple entries such as "Iraq", which lead to news websites. These are ranked either in order of relevance or by date, so that the most recent or most focused appear at the top of the huge list.

This means that articles carrying more authority, say from CNN or the BBC, can be ousted from the first page of results, simply because they are not as recent or as relevant to the keyword entered in the search line.

Now Google, whose name has become synonymous with internet searching, plans to build a database that will compare the track record and credibility of all news sources around the world, and adjust the ranking of any search results accordingly.

The database will be built by continually monitoring the number of stories from all news sources, along with average story length, number with bylines, and number of the bureaux cited, along with how long they have been in business. Google's database will also keep track of the number of staff a news source employs, the volume of internet traffic to its website and the number of countries accessing the site.

Google will take all these parameters, weight them according to formulae it is constructing, and distil them down to create a single value. This number will then be used to rank the results of any news search.

Cleaning pagefile.sys

Intro

Pagefile.sys is a file that is currently used by Microsoft Windows to store frames of memory that do not currently fit into physical memory. The paging file allows the memory requirement to run all tasks to exceed the amount of physical memory and swapping allows multiple processes to run at the same time

Virtual memory extension

This technique below allows you to extend your virtual memory.

Under Windows XP and 2000, you can clean the file pagefile.sys to improve its overall performance. This can be performed by creating or modifying the REG_DWORD value from 1 to 0 in the registry KEY ClearPageFileAtShutdown. This is located under the KEY :
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SessionManager\Memory Management

To access the above mentioned Key, Go to menu Start> Run and type regedit.

This modification can surely impact the time needed by Windows need to boot.

This system file is situated under the root: C:\Pagefile.sys

Optimizing Windows boot process.

Click on the start menu.

Open the run tab.

Type in sysedit and press OK.

This should open the System configuration editor, and in the C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT panel, type in the following command: LH C:\WINDOWS\SMARTDRV.EXE, this will improve the hard disk memory cache monitoring when starting Windows.

Save the modifications and restart your PC.

Note that this command line is not set up as default on Windows XP.

C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT file is automatically loaded when Windows start up. By adding to the C:\WINDOWS\SMARTDRV.EXE command line to it, this will result in the execution of the command.

Be careful to avoid any modifications in the other panels , this could severely affect your system.

Installation problems- memory test

Sometimes when installing a fresh copy of Windows, there is and error message notifying that the setup can’t continue because there a certain file is missing or that formatting is not complete.

Causes:

Installation CD is not good condition.

CD drive is not working properly.

MBR is infected by a virus.

The RAM memory is faulty: during the boot process the exact amount of memory will be displayed.

Solutions:

Test with another CD drive.

Make a scan disk.

Test the installation CD on another PC.

Memory test:

First of all is to determine that:

If you have two memory cards, test them separately (this require that you remove them from your motherboard and test them one after the other).

Another option is to use Memtest86, it takes a long time to scan, but not need to open up your PC.

To run it from a floppy, you need to down load it, extract the archive file. Run the install.bat file specifying the floppy drive letter (normally A:\) and the program will automatically copy the necessary files on a previously loaded formatted disk. Once the process complete the floppy disk will not be readable under Windows. You can format it if you want to use it again.

From a CD

Simply burn the .ISO file on a CD using Nero Burning Rom. To launch Mentest for the CD, your PC boot sequence must be configured, in order to start from the CD drive.

These modifications are done within the Bios:

Start your PC

Press delete or F2 to enter your BIOS

Choose the boot sequence option and select your CD drive as First Boot Device.

Save the modifications and quit BIOS.

Your PC will restart automatically; press any key to start Memtest.

If the problem persist, check out the motherboard or your graphic

Restrict change of background

This tips has been raised out to show you how to configure and restrict the background change of your computer for specific purpose like company policy.

Go to menu “Start” and select “Run”

Then type “Regedit” to open the registry.

Once registry open, select the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\policies

If the file does not exist, click on “Edit” > New > Key. Then name the file as “policies” and validate

Then right click on the new file “policies” and select “New” > “KEY” which you will name as “ActiveDesktop”.

In the right part of your windows registry, select the value “DWORD” and name it as “NoChangingWallPaper” and the DWORD value as 1.

The DWORD value 1 will restrict change in desktop wallpaper. To reactivate change , put the value as 0.

How to log in automatically with Windows XP

f you have recently updated your Windows with the Automatic Updates, you will notice that you will not be able to log automatically into your account. This is due to .NET Framework installation that automatically creates an additional account known as ASP.NET. This can be changed by the following method:

Using the Run feature

1. Go to the "Start" button and choose "Run"
2. Hence, copy and paste the command CONTROL USERPASSWORDS2.            When done, click "OK"
3. From the given list, select the user that you want to allow automatic login on
4. Disable the option "Users must enter a user name and password to use this      computer" and click "OK"
5. When done, enter the password for the user account to allow this option.

Error message: UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

Intro

This message does not necessarily mean that the hard disk is defective, it may be simply a problem in the boot sequence of the disc.

When booting up to Windows XP, you are prompted by the following error message, "Unmountable Boot Volume".Be assured, this message does not necessarily mean that the hard disk is defective, it may be due to a problem in the boot sequence of the disc.

Modify the rate at which restore points are deleted

Its true that restore points are very useful, but bear in mind that they also occupy a significant space on your hard disk (depending on the size of your hard disk, a restore point can occupy several gigabytes)

Another constraint of early created restore point after a given period of time no longer work and clutter your hard disk unnecessarily.

It is more practicable to delete your unused restore point to save space on your hard disk. To do this lawful setting, follow below instructions :

In the registry as explained above, double-click on the value DWORD recognized as RPLifeInterval

Enter the restore point lifetime value to 604800 sec to delete if it has more a week lifetime.

Thanks to consider that early created restore point can be deleted manually as per below indication:

Double click on “My Computer” and right click on hard drive and select “Properties”.
Then click on “Disk clean up”.
In the new window, select “Disk Clean Up and other options”.
In the “Other options” press on “Clean” for “System Restore"

Modify the rate at which restore points are created

An operating system like Windows XP is configured to perform a restore point by default every 24 hours ().
A restore point is created if a change in the registry is detected by the system.

In the case you have to add or remove applications regularly (downloading, testing, debugging new software). It is therefore recommended that you optimize the rate at which restore points updated for security constraints.

Below is a simple explanatory procedure of how to configure this setting:-

First of all, open the registry editor by typing regedit in the Run menu and press OK.

Click on: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore.

• In the right table, double click on click on the DWORD entry named RPGlobalInterval.
Modify from Hexadecimal to decimals.

The default parameters are settled to a time laps of 86400 sec (24 hrs). Modify this value dividing it by 2(43200 sec) if you wish to have two restore points. This practice may be very useful in case of system failure.

Note that you can create manually your own restore point (Before installing a demo version of a software for testing purposes)

To perform this setting :

Go to Start menu > all programs > Accessories> System Tools > System Restore .
Then select the option “create a restore point”.

In the text box, enter the description of your restore point (This is very important in view to identify between the different restore points created, the one you created manually and the others default to your system.) It can be the name of the program you are going to install.

At this point, you can roll back from any modifications made from your previous configuration.

Web Browser War Continue - Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2

The latest internet browser from Microsoft, Internet Explorer 8, brings out a number of great features, makes browsing the internet safer, easier, and wide compatibility.

From the looks of Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2, it seems to be a lot like Internet Explorer 7. However, Microsoft has added a number of changes. Most people already had seen some of these features in IE’s known rival, Mozilla Firefox 3.

Here are the features of Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2:

Tabbed Browsing

This is useful if you want to browse multiple website without opening a new Internet Explorer Window. Besides that, if you accidentally close the browser window in Internet Explorer 8, it will give you option to reopen (restore) the website or use Home Page in the next program launch. These features seem already available in Mozilla Firefox. But Internet Explorer 8 has added the features to group the similar tab (from the same website) together using color coding.

Another new features added to Internet Explorer 8 is tab isolation. This feature is developed to avoid the program crash from the buggy Web site. When Internet Explorer 8 encounter the buggy website, only the specified tab will close and this prevent you from information lose when browsing other website.

Web Slices

Internet Explorer 8 Web Slices is a latest feature that allows users to select the portion of web pages they want to monitor so you can view the updates of the selected portion without open the actual web page. This feature is pretty cool to me; it allows you to monitor real time update of the website such as price information, bidding information, stock market and important information that updates regularly. From the Web Slices, you can also click on it to view the actual page.

Accelerators

Accelerators allow users to get specified information from a web page without open another website to get the information details or leaving the current page. For example, if users want to get the details of selected address the web page, the user capable to view the map by the address and get additional information for it. You can also use Accerators feature to Digg the current page, blog it, news lookup, dictionary lookup, share the page in your Facebook, etc.

Security Enhancement

Internet Explorer 8 introduces a new feature that allows users to browsing the internet much safer with InPrivate feature. If you enable this feature, Internet Explorer 8 will not save any sensitive or private data such as history, password, log in information, and so forth. It’s just like your browsing session never happened. This feature is already used in Apple’s Safari web browser, what the different is Internet Explorer makes InPrivate status more visible.

Internet Explorer 8 also integrated with the latest phishing filter called SmartScreen which improved the previous versions. This feature will protect you from visit the scam/phishing website and warning you about it. However, this feature still relies on the database of known phishing sites, if the phishing site is new, it still can be visit by users.

From Internet Explorer 8 address bar, you can also see the site’s domains is in darker text color, so it easier for users to identify whether the website is phishing or not.

Backwards Compatibility

The Internet Explorer 8 also supports backward compatibility by provide the option to display web page the same way as Internet Explorer 7. If users find out the web page doesn’t display correctly in Internet Explorer 8, they can always revert back to Internet Explorer 7 view.

TechSmith SnagIt Version 9.0 Reviews

The most superior screen-capture program just got better. SnagIt version 9 maintains all of its predecessor’s basic (it can capture your whole desktop, parts of it, scrolling web pages, and even short videos) and adds up brand-new tricks.
A thumbnail organizer shows recent captures and allows you save them, organize them, and mark them for easy finding. You will be able to lookup by another data, too, such as the date or size of the capture.

Mixing multiple images is a breeze, and the utility’s revamped user interface makes commenting images is a cinch.

If you have not used SnagIt and want to capture screens, give it a try. Previous versions users will want this upgrade.

Norton Internet Security 2009 Review

Most users love the protection security software package gives them but hate the way it drags down their regular activities. Good news: Norton Internet Security 2009 affects operation less than any suite I’ve tested. Most security tasks run in the background during idle time. My performance tests confirms that Norton slows systems fewer than the rest.

The big independent antivirus testing labs all certify the effectiveness of Symantec’s antivirus technology; those who have tested the 2009 version find it better. It scans files on demand, on access, and during idle time. A full scan tool 50 minutes on my basic test system, but the Norton Insight have cuts down that to 5 minutes on future scans.

rton scored more effective than other suites in the malware removal test, and it was typically thorough. In the malware blocking test it got rid of all but among the malware samples before they launched. Overall it did more proficient than all the other suites and standalone antispyware products that I have tested with my current collection of malware. Norton’s phishing protection works the same as that of the 2008 edition and continues to be highly accurate.

The firewall is tempered agains spyware, and it easily passed my barrage of Web-based attacks. And while I attacked a trial system utilizing the Core Impact penetration tool, it stopped all the sample exploits.

The Network Security map shows all the devices connected to your network and reports whether your wireless network is protected. From the map you may remotely monitor other computers on the network that are also running Norton. And you’ll be able to lock out particular devices by setting their trust level to restricted.

Spam protection, nevertheless, is worthless. In testing, it tossed away more than a third of my valid personal mail into the junk e-mail folder and missed nearly 30% of undeniable spam. Do not trust in this feature.

Norton’s Identity Safe is a password-protected way to store credentials and log on automatically. It as well fills Web forms with the predefined personal data, all protected by a strong master password.

This is definitely the slimmest, most unobstrusive Norton ever, yet its protection is the superior where it counts. Despite a couple of weaknesses, it is the best all arounf security suite I’ve ever seen.

Maximize Gaming Performance - Dell XPS M1730 (Penryn)

The newest Dell XPS M1730 (Penryn) us a aweinspiring piece of technological splendor. A Bold statement yes, but one that’s easily warranted by this masterfully designed gaming laptop, despite its size and heft.

Weight is, in fact, this rig’s only limitation. With its gigantic AC adaptor, the weight of the 17”, wide screen M1730 jumps to almost 14 pounds. Nonetheless, M1730 is a terrific example of where technology is heading. LED lights shine out through the grilles of the front speakers and from underneath the keyboard, the numeric keypad, and the center of the lid. You can also customize the lights with Dell’s Quickset software. If you’re more interested in conserving power or battery life, the intensity of these lights can be lowered or turned off.

The feature set is solid, for the most part, except for the aging DVI-out connector. The 2.6GHz Intel Core 2 Extreme X9000 represents the M1730’s move to a “Penryn” core. The M1730 also includes a built in PhysX card from Ageia - a first for a laptop, as well as nVidia Geforce 8800M GTX SLI graphics cards.

GA.JS: New Google Analytics Tracking Code

On October 16, 2007 Google announced a new version of the Google Analytics Tracking Code named ga.js. This means that there are now two versions of the GATC: the old urchin.js and the new ga.js. What makes the new ga.js different from urchin.js?

* The ability to track events

* New object oriented style; no more functions
   like urchinTracker()

* Smaller size for faster downloads

This post is all about why Google introduced a new GATC, what has changed and how this is going to affect your GA implementation.

Why the Change?

Simply put, Google changed the code to support event tracking. I’m not going to focus on event tracking here, this post is just about the style and usage of the new tracking code. Please see my posts on Event tracking for more information.
Did Google need to create a new tracking code? Maybe not. But I think the modifications necessary to implement event tracking were easier using a completely new set of code rather than the old code. If you look at the entire GA system, almost every part had been re-worked since the acquisition of Urchin in 2005 except the javascript tracking code. It was time for an update and, with the addition of event tracking, the timing was right.

What Exactly has Changed?

In short, everything has changed. All of the functions that we’ve been using are now gone. Functions like urchinTracker() and __utmSetVar() no longer exist. The reason is that the new tracking code is completely object oriented. For those of you that are unfamiliar with programming styles, object oriented programming is a more modular way of creating code.

Object oriented programming does not have functions and variables, it has objects, methods and properties. Each object has an associated set of methods and an associated set of properties. Think of an object as a car. The methods are the actions that you can do with a car, like start, stop. Properties are characteristics of the car, like the color, number of doors, etc.

Details of the New Page Tag

Let’s look at the old and new code to better understand the difference. I’ve numbered the lines so I can better explain what’s going on.

Code #1: Page Tag using urchin.js:

Code #2: Page tag using ga.js

While there are some similarities, you can see that the new code is different. Let me walk you through what it does.

The first part of the code is the reference to ga.js (line #1-#4). This is analogous to the call for urchin.js in the old code (line #1). The big change here is that the code will automatically detect if the current page is secure or non-secure (i.e. using HTTP or HTTPS). It will then dynamically request the appropriate ga.js file from the server. This is a little piece of code that was borrowed from website optimizer.

Next section of code, lines #6 - #8, is where all the work happens. First, we tell GA the account number using pageTracker._gat.__getTracker() (line #6). This is similar to setting the account number variable in the old code (line #4). Then we call the pageTracker._initData() method. This method collects information about the browser, the referral information, etc. And finally, on line #8, we call pageTracker._trackPageview(). This is the new urchinTracker(). This is how we send the data to GA and create pageviews.

The new code does the same thing as the old code, but in a very different way. Again, all of the old functions have changed and in some cases they’ve gone away. If you were using urchinTracker() to generate pageviews (like I was) then you will eventually need to replace that code with pageTracker._trackPageview().

Should you Upgrade?

This is the question that everyone is going to ask and there is no right or wrong answer. Eventually Google will kill urchin.js and you will have to change. But I don’t think that will happen for at least 18 months.

Here’s how I would approach the decision making process. First, do you absolutely need event tracking? If yes, then you should upgrade. You can read all about event tracking in this series of posts.

If you don’t need event tracking then my suggestion is to evaluate the complexity of your current GA implementation and then decide. If it’s fairly straight forward, i.e. you’re not an e-commerce site or you don’t have additional urchinTraker() calls, then I would suggest migrating.

However, if you have a complex implementation, one where you’re calling urchinTracker() a lot, you’re doing cross domain tracking, or you’ve implemented e-commerce tracking, then I would take my time. Plan your migration. There is no rush and you want to get it right.

No matter when you choose to upgrade, make sure you test your implementation before migrating. You don’t want a big hole in your data due to a mistake.

And Finally…

There is a lot more to the ga.js. As I mentioned before, all of the old functions have been replaced. I’ll have a listing of all the new methods soon. Until then, start thinking about your migration!

New satellite to give Google Maps unprecedented resolution

Google has taken the war over exclusive web content into space. Not directly, of course—the satellite that was recently launched into space on a rocket bearing the Google logo was the result of a joint venture between a commercial satellite imaging provider and the department of defense. In return for undisclosed terms, Google got two considerations: its logo on the side of the launch vehicle, and exclusive use of the mapping images that the satellite produces.

The partnerships in the new satellite are extensive. The hardware was built by General Dynamics and put in orbit by Boeing; the funding for the project came in part from a commercial satellite imaging company, Geoeye. The rest of the funding came from the Defense Department's National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, which provides map-based intelligence resources. The launch took place yesterday from the Air Force's Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

Geoeye is one of a number of commercial satellite imagery providers, and the company provide images to everyone from news organizations to human rights organizations. The US government has also been known to buy time on the satellites, both in order to use the images themselves and to prevent other companies from getting access to them.

As a comparison provided by Geoeye reveals, the new space-going hardware is a significant improvement over previous generations. Its camera drops the resolution of images down from a meter to half that figure—apparently, the hardware goes down to 0.41m, but the DoD won't let that resolution onto the market. Images will go deeper into the blue end of the spectrum, and the camera can provide color images at a bit over a meter and a half resolution.

Nowhere in Geoeye's press material for the satellite, however, is there any mention of Google. Apart from the evidence provided by the Google logo on the side of the launch vehicle, the rest of the information on the project floating around the web comes from Reuters, which notes that the two Google founders were present to watch the launch. Apparently, the search giant has forged an agreement that will allow them, and only them, to use the images obtained from the satellite for online mapping purposes. For anything else, anyone with the money can buy the pics.

That point's worth emphasizing, because a number of reports have gotten a bit hyperbolic about Google's role. One report suggested that the search giant had "launched its own imaging satellite." Others played it as completely under control of Google and the military. (Rest assured that the military will be calling the shots on all major decisions involving this satellite.)

It's not at all clear what the imaging hardware's extra resolution gets Google, other than sharper pictures and the possibility of filling a few specialized, niche needs. A half-meter resolution isn't really sufficient to substitute for the street view cameras, but perhaps the company's founders are simply satisfied by the fact that they have them, and Yahoo and Microsoft don't.

Turning off System Beeps

If you want to turn off all system beeps (like the ones that go through your computers' internal speaker):

1-Start Regedit

2-Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Sound

3-Edit the key Beep and give it a value of No

VPN and Browsing

1-Browsing the remote network can be difficult if not impossible over a VPN connection. There are too many variables that can hinder this.

2-To make browsing work a little easier, you might want to edit the HOSTS and LMHOSTS files on the VPN Client.

3-These are in the C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc directory for XP and Vista. In the \Windows directory for Win9x.

4-Just add a line with the LAN IP address of the VPN server followed by it's name.
e.g - 192.168.1.10 SERVER

5-You can also add in the LAN IP address and Name of any other computers on the remote network that you may want to connect to.

6-Also make sure the workgroup name is the same on all computers.

7-Now you can use the Windows Explorer to map the network connections
