Everybody’s favorite open-source browser, Firefox, is great right out of the box. And by adding some of the awesome extensions available out there, the browser just gets better and better.
But look under the hood, and there are a bunch of hidden (and some not-so-secret) tips and tricks available that will crank Firefox up and pimp your browser. Make it faster, cooler, more efficient. Get to be a Jedi master with the following cool Firefox tricks.
1) More screen space. Make your icons small. Go to View - Toolbars - Customize and check the “Use small icons” box.
2) Smart keywords. If there’s a search you use a lot (let’s say IMDB.com’s people search), this is an awesome tool that not many people use. Right-click on the search box, select “Add a Keyword for this search”, give the keyword a name and an easy-to-type and easy-to-remember shortcut name (let’s say “actor”) and save it. Now, when you want to do an actor search, go to Firefox’s address bar, type “actor” and the name of the actor and press return. Instant search! You can do this with any search box.
3) Keyboard shortcuts. This is where you become a real Jedi. It just takes a little while to learn these, but once you do, your browsing will be super fast. Here are some of the most common (and my personal favs):
Spacebar (page down)
Shift-Spacebar (page up)
Ctrl+F (find)
Alt-N (find next)
Ctrl+D (bookmark page)
Ctrl+T (new tab)
Ctrl+K (go to search box)
Ctrl+L (go to address bar)
Ctrl+= (increase text size)
Ctrl+- (decrease text size)
Ctrl-W (close tab)
F5 (reload)
Alt-Home (go to home page)
4) Auto-complete. This is another keyboard shortcut, but it’s not commonly known and very useful. Go to the address bar (Control-L) and type the name of the site without the “www” or the “.com”. Let’s say “google”. Then press Control-Enter, and it will automatically fill in the “www” and the “.com” and take you there - like magic! For .net addresses, press Shift-Enter, and for .org addresses, press Control-Shift-Enter.
5) Tab navigation. Instead of using the mouse to select different tabs that you have open, use the keyboard. Here are the shortcuts:
Ctrl+Tab (rotate forward among tabs)
Ctrl+Shft+Tab (rotate to the previous tab)
Ctrl+1-9 (choose a number to jump to a specific tab)
6) Mouse shortcuts. Sometimes you’re already using your mouse and it’s easier to use a mouse shortcut than to go back to the keyboard. Master these cool ones:
Middle click on link (opens in new tab)
Shift-scroll down (previous page)
Shift-scroll up (next page)
Ctrl-scroll up (decrease text size)
Ctrl-scroll down (increase text size)
Middle click on a tab (closes tab)
7) Delete items from address bar history. Firefox’s ability to automatically show previous URLs you’ve visited, as you type, in the address bar’s drop-down history menu is very cool. But sometimes you just don’t want those URLs to show up (I won’t ask why). Go to the address bar (Ctrl-L), start typing an address, and the drop-down menu will appear with the URLs of pages you’ve visited with those letters in them. Use the down-arrow to go down to an address you want to delete, and press the Delete key to make it disappear.
User chrome. If you really want to trick out your Firefox, you’ll want to create a UserChrome.css file and customize your browser. It’s a bit complicated to get into here, but check out this tutorial.
9) Create a user.js file. Another way to customize Firefox, creating a user.js file can really speed up your browsing. You’ll need to create a text file named user.js in your profile folder (see this to find out where the profile folder is) and see this example user.js file that you can modify. Created by techlifeweb.com, this example explains some of the things you can do in its comments.
10) about:config. The true power user’s tool, about.config isn’t something to mess with if you don’t know what a setting does. You can get to the main configuration screen by putting about:config in the browser’s address bar. See Mozillazine’s about:config tips and screenshots.
11) Add a keyword for a bookmark. Go to your bookmarks much faster by giving them keywords. Right-click the bookmark and then select Properties. Put a short keyword in the keyword field, save it, and now you can type that keyword in the address bar and it will go to that bookmark.
12) Speed up Firefox. If you have a broadband connection (and most of us do), you can use pipelining to speed up your page loads. This allows Firefox to load multiple things on a page at once, instead of one at a time (by default, it’s optimized for dialup connections). Here’s how:
Type “about:config” into the address bar and hit return. Type “network.http” in the filter field, and change the following settings (double-click on them to change them):
Set “network.http.pipelining” to “true”
Set “network.http.proxy.pipelining” to “true”
Set “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests” to a number like 30. This will allow it to make 30 requests at once.
Also, right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it “nglayout.initialpaint.delay” and set its value to “0″. This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives.
13) Limit RAM usage. If Firefox takes up too much memory on your computer, you can limit the amount of RAM it is allowed to us. Again, go to about:config, filter “browser.cache” and select “browser.cache.disk.capacity”. It’s set to 50000, but you can lower it, depending on how much memory you have. Try 15000 if you have between 512MB and 1GB ram.
14) Reduce RAM usage further for when Firefox is minimized. This setting will move Firefox to your hard drive when you minimize it, taking up much less memory. And there is no noticeable difference in speed when you restore Firefox, so it’s definitely worth a go. Again, go to about:config, right-click anywhere and select New-> Boolean. Name it “config.trim_on_minimize” and set it to TRUE. You have to restart Firefox for these settings to take effect.
15) Move or remove the close tab button. Do you accidentally click on the close button of Firefox’s tabs? You can move them or remove them, again through about:config. Edit the preference for “browser.tabs.closeButtons”. Here are the meanings of each value:
0: Display a close button on the active tab only
1:(Default) Display close buttons on all tabs
2:Don’t display any close buttons
3:Display a single close button at the end of the tab bar (Firefox 1.x behavior)
How to Search Google For Confidential files on the Internet?
Google hacking is considered to be divided into 2 distinct categories. The first category is called ethical Google hacking, which means that people who conduct these hacking ventures on Google only aim to improve the quality of their searches in terms of results. For instance, there are additional syntax and character strings that can bolster the chances of your Google searches to provide you with the results you need.
On the other hand, unethical hacking is the process of entering private networks or sites on the Internet and offline in order to access confidential information and the like. The data that is retrieved from hacking into these sites and networks are then used for criminal activities. These criminals oftentimes use the confidential information they gain to extract passwords, banking details, credit card accounts, and even personal data that can be used to further support their criminal activities.
There is a Google hack that makes use of the filetype syntax followed by any file format directed towards a domain extension as well as the particular type of information. For instance, you can do a search on Google for all file types related to the data you want to acquire by keying in: filename:xxx site:yyy zzz where xxx is the file extension, yyy the domain extension, and zzz the type of information. In more general terms - if you wanted to have access to the confidential documents of any government, you can key in filetype:doc site:gov confidential.

Make Orkut Free From Google Ads
Internet is a vast place for people like us who like to surf from one site to another. Social networking sites are just one more place to surf. These sites such as Orkut, MySpace, Hi5 or FaceBook have penetrated so deep into our lives that the moment we start surfing, we logon to these sites first.
Orkut is one of social networking sites owned by Google. Though it's only popular in Brazil and India, but for some reason, Alexa says Orkut is the 9th most visited site in Ireland.
One thing which I have been annoyed of lately is the Google Ads shown by Google in the community homepage as this one.
But applying my hack you can free yourself from these ads
Hack
First and foremost requirement of this hack is that you should be using Mozilla Firefox. This Open Source piece of software is best software I've ever came across.
Fire your Firefox and proceed to this addon link -> AdBlock Plus . According to their developers
"Ever been annoyed by all those ads and banners on the internet that often take longer to download than everything else on the page? Install Adblock Plus now and get rid of them."
Click "Add to Firefox" and install the addon for your browser. Next step is restart your browser. Now everyone must be thinking how this can be called a hack when it comes to just installing a simple addon. Wait!!!
Whenever you want to block an ad, just right click it and click "AdBlock Image". But clicking all the ads inside Orkut is an impossible task because for that you have to search each and every community. But ever noticed that what is common with all these ads, their command format is
http://www.orkut.co.in/AdsIframe.aspx?xxxxxxx
This page is responsible for generating the Adsense code and placement of ads on pages.
Follow the next step and block all the Google ads. Right click any Google ads and click "Adblock Image". A box will popup and just enter "http://www.orkut.co.in/AdsIframe.aspx"
Bingo !!! You will blocked that ADS Page

Services You Can Disable
There are quite a few services you can disable from starting automatically.
This would be to speed up your boot time and free resources.
They are only suggestions so I suggestion you read the description of each one when you run Services
and that you turn them off one at a time.
Some possibilities are:
Alerter - Sends alert messages to specified users that are connected to the server computer.
Application Management - Allows software to tap directly into the Add/Remove Programs feature via the Windows Installer technology.
Background Intelligent Transfer Service - The Background Intelligent Transfer service is used by programs (such as Windows AutoUpdate) to download files by using spare bandwidth.
Clipbook - ClipBook permits you to cut and paste text and graphics over the network.
Error Reporting Service - Allows applications to send error reports to Microsoft in the event of an application fault.
Fast User Switching - Windows XP allows users to switch quickly between accounts, without requiring them to log off.
Help and Support - Allows the XP Built-in Help and Support Center to run.
IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service - You don't need this if you have other software to create CDs.
Indexing Service - Indexes contents and properties of files on local and remote computers; provides rapid access to files through flexible querying language.
IP SEC - Manages IP security policy and starts the ISAKMP/Oakley (IKE) and the IP security driver. If you are not on a domain, you likely don't need this running.
Messenger - Transmits net send and Alerter service messages between clients and servers. This is how a lot of pop-up windows start appearing on your desktop

Removing Unnecessary Programs from Starting Automatically
CONFIG.SYS & AUTOEXEC.BAT Files
Make sure you don't have any unnecessary device drivers or programs here. Windows95 has most you will need already built into the OS.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Removing Unnecessary Programs from Starting Automatically
Many programs add portions of themselves starting automatically on every login.
This can be either in the Startup Folder or the Registry.
One easy way to tell is by looking at how many icons are in your system tray. If you have a large number, perhaps unnecessary resources are being allocated them as well as increasing your boot time.
Typical examples are Microsoft Office, Office FindFast, Real Player, ATI Video setting etc.
You can remove them in one of three main ways:
In the Start / Programs / Startup Folder
In the Registry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Run
If you have Win98, WinME or Windows2000 you can use MSCONFIG to easily remove programs. This is my preference since it allows you to toggle them back on again in case you make a mistake

First is to delete the Internet Explorer Temporary Files and History.

One thing that is often overlooked, and can have a negative affect on your computer's performance,
are all the files that are in the TEMP directory. I've had quite a few people ready to get new computers until this was cleaned.
These are easy to clean and slightly different in Win9x and Windows2000 or WindowsXP
Windows98
Open up a DOS prompt
CD \windows\temp (make sure you are in that directory before running the next line.
Run deltree /y *.*

Using UNC Network Names with Files
Using UNC Network Names with Files
As already mentioned, you can use long file names in an MS DOS Box.
But you can even use UNC-style network names.
Example: DIR \\server\share1\dir1
will give you all files on the computer named "server", in the share named "share1" and in the directory "dir1".
This does not work with CD, but it will work with MD, RD, DIR, COPY, MOVE, REN, and so on.
I use this in combination with a batch file to copy files to a number of computers on a network.

Determine the Optimal MAX MTU Setting
Determine the Optimal MAX MTU Setting
There are several programs available that will change you MAX MTU setting for you or you can do it by editing the registry directly
An easy way to determine what that setting should be is to use the PING command.
You basically want to start out with a MAX MTU of 1500 then use the PING command as follows:
PING HOST_IP_ADDRESS -f -l PACKET_SIZE
where HOST_IP_ADDRESS is the IP address of the site you want to ping and
PACKET_SIZE is the size of the MAX MTU setting you are trying to test
Keep decreasing the packet size until you don't get any messages regarding fragmentation

When you go to a web site, the first thing that happens is that a query goes out to the DNS server for IP address of the web site.

207.46.130.149 www.microsoft.com #.url
You can do this for all the sites you regularly visit.
When you go to a web site, the first thing that happens is that a query goes out to the DNS server for IP address of the web site.
In order to eliminate this query, you can simply add the IP address and web name into the HOSTS file in the Windows directory.

VPN and Browsing
VPN and Browsing
Browsing the remote network can be difficult if not impossible over a VPN connection. There are too many variables that can hinder this.
To make browsing work a little easier, you might want to edit the HOSTS and LMHOSTS files on the VPN Client.
These are in the C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc directory for XP and Vista. In the \Windows directory for Win9x.
Just add a line with the LAN IP address of the VPN server followed by it's name.
e.g - 192.168.1.10 SERVER
You can also add in the LAN IP address and Name of any other computers on the remote network that you may want to connect to.
Also make sure the workgroup name is the same on all computers.

The work around is:

But load the original 95 Standard IDE/IO for the secondary port
Then you can play music CD's etc..
Then you can remove the DOS Driver and the old Win3.1 driver from the SYSTEM.INI
The performance does seem a little faster after doing all of this.

Increasing Disk Performance
Increasing Disk Performance
Ever wonder why Windows 3.1 was noticeably faster than Windows 3.11? It has to do with something called Synchonous Buffer Commits, this tells Windows whether or not to lie to an application and tell the application that it's writing data to the drive when Windows is actually caching the data in memory. With Windows '95 they give you the option to disable this, thus increasing disk intensive application performance but there are some caveats to consider. If you lose power the data in cache will NOT be written to disk this will be BAD so I'd only recommend using this on a machine with an UPS. Well, Here how you do it.
Go to Start \ Settings \ Control Panel \ System \ Performance \ File System \ Troubleshooting
Check the box Disable synchronous buffer commits.
Expect about a 10% speed increase in disk intensive applications.

This concerns the "Network Server" option ... You already know about the screw up in Win95 release prior to OSR2 but, did you know you can also customize the settings in the registry?
Open Regedit
Go to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\FS Templates"
Add a new key called "Custom".
Then add two new binary values under that key with the names "NameCache" and "PathCache", just as with the other entries.
I would recommend using values somewhere in-between what the standard values are for "Desktop" and "Network Server". The values I have found to be the best compromise are "00 08 00 00" and "30 00 00 00" respectively, your milage may vary. (2048 filenames and 48 pathnames)
Close Regedit
Right click on "My Computer"
Select Properties then the Performance tab.
Select "File System" and you will now find the "Custom" option in the drop down box.
Select it and click on OK then be sure to reboot.
While this doesn't save a lot of memory, at least your name caches aren't using more than they need.

Even if you never use DriveSpace or DblSpace, Win95 automatically loads the drivers. While the drivers are not huge, they do consume some resources. To keep Win95 from loading them all you need to do is:
Find the MSDOS.SYS file in the root directory of your boot drive.
Right click on the file, clear the read-only attribute then edit the file.
Add these two lines to the Options section.
Dblspace=0
Drvspace=0
Be sure to save the changes, reset the read-only attribute, then reboot.
This does save a significant amount of memory but more importantly, it will reduce the number of threads running in the background.
