He has twice been runner-up for FIFA World Player of the Year, and in 2004 was the world's highest-paid footballer. He was Google's most searched of all sports topics in both 2003 and 2004. Such global recognition has made him an elite advertising brand and a top fashion icon. [6] Beckham was captain of England from 15 November 2000 to 2 July 2006. He made 58 appearances as captain, and ended his tenure in that role after the 2006 FIFA World Cup finals. He continued to make contributions for the England national team in 2007 competitions. Beckham captained Manchester United for the first time on October 21st 2000 in a Premiership match against Leeds United. He came on as a substitute for regular captain Roy Keane, who was injured. Beckham went on to score a free-kick in this match, which finished 3-0.
Beckham's career began when he signed a professional contract with Manchester United, making his first-team debut in 1992 aged 17. During his time there, United won the Premier League title six times, the FA Cup twice, and the UEFA Champions League in 1999. In January 2007, it was announced that Beckham would leave Real Madrid and sign a five-year contract with the Los Angeles Galaxy.
Beckham's new contract with the Galaxy, effective 1 July 2007, gave him the highest salary of any MLS player in history. He debuted for the team on 21 July in a friendly versus Chelsea at the Home Depot Center, and on 15 August, he had his first start with the team, scoring his first goal in the 2007 SuperLiga semi-final. He was a member of the French national team that won the 1998 FIFA World Cup and Euro 2000, and was also the recipient of the Golden Ball after he captained the French side to the 2006 World Cup final, a match that saw his career end in controversy after he was sent off for headbutting Italy defender Marco Materazzi.
He played for four European clubs, and lifted the 2002 UEFA Champions League trophy with Real Madrid C.F. after scoring the match-winning goal. One of only two three-time FIFA World Player of the Year winners (Ronaldo the other), he also finished in the top three an additional three occasions, and was also named European Footballer of the Year in 1998. Football career
Ronaldo was born in Bento Ribeiro, a poor neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro. Like many of his friends, he began to play football in the streets of his neighborhood. Ronaldo's actual date of birth is September 18, however, his father did not register his birth certificate until September 22,[citation needed]so some discrepancy has existed as to his actual birth date. His football abilities were first recognised when he was 14. He was recommended to the Brazil youth team by World Cup winner Jairzinho, who also arranged for his own former club, Cruzeiro Esporte Clube, to sign him when he was old enough for a professional contract.[citation needed]
Ronaldo scored 12 goals in 13 games in the Brazilian National Championship, and in the Minas Gerais State Championship he scored all three goals in Cruzeiro's 3-1 victory against arch-rival Atlético Mineiro. After being scouted by Piet de Visser, he was soon transferred for US$6 million to PSV Eindhoven, where he scored 42 goals in 46 league games and reached a total of 55 goals in 57 official appearances. Later he attracted the attention of FC Barcelona. He played for Barça in the 1996-97 season, scoring 47 in 49 (including appearances in the Copa del Rey and European Cup Winners Cup) on the way to leading the Catalan side to UEFA Cup Winners' Cup triumph (where he capped the season with the winning goal in the cup final itself). Inter Milan swooped to sign him the following year, and Ronaldo duly helped them repeat his former side's cup-winning run, this time in the UEFA Cup. As of 2006, Ronaldo is the last player to score more than 30 goals in 1 season in the Spanish La Liga.
On 21 November 1999, during a Serie A match against Lecce, Ronaldo felt his knee buckle and was forced to limp off the pitch. Medical exams after the match confirmed that the striker had ruptured a tendon in his right knee and would require surgery. During his first comeback on April 12, 2000, he played only seven minutes during the first leg of the Coppa Italia final against Lazio before injuring his knee for a second time.
After two operations and 20 months of rehabilitation, Ronaldo came back for the 2002 World Cup, helping Brazil win their fifth World Cup title. Later in 2002 he won the World Player of the Year award for the third time, and transferred from Inter to Real Madrid for approximately €39 million. Even though he was sidelined through injury until October 2002, fans continued to chant his name in the stands. Ronaldo scored twice in his debut for Real Madrid. That same reception was observed on the night of the final game of the season against Athletic Bilbao, where Ronaldo scored again to seal his first season with 23 league goals and the La Liga Championship title for 2003, which Ronaldo had previously failed to win while with Barcelona.

About Bill Gates

BILL GATES
Born October 28, 1955 (1955-10-28) (age 52)
Seattle, Washington, U.S.
Occupation Chairman, MicrosoftCo-Chair (Retired), Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
Net worth US$58 billion (2008)[1]
Spouse Melinda Gates (1994–present)
Children
Three
Early life
Gates was born in Seattle, Washington, to William H. Gates, Sr. and Mary Maxwell Gates. His family was wealthy; his father was a prominent lawyer, his mother served on the board of directors for First Interstate BancSystem and the United Way, and her father, J. W. Maxwell, was a national bank president. Gates has one older sister, Kristi (Kristianne), and one younger sister, Libby. He was the fourth of his name in his family, but was known as William Gates III or "Trey" because his father had dropped his own "III" suffix.[6]Early on in his life, Gates parents had a law career in mind for him.[7] At thirteen he enrolled in the Lakeside School, an exclusive preparatory school.[8]When he was in the eighth grade, the Mothers Club at the school used proceeds from Lakeside School's rummage sale to buy an ASR-33 teletype terminal and a block of computer time on a General Electric (GE) computer for the school's students.[9] Gates took an interest in programming the GE system in BASIC and was excused from math classes to pursue his interest. He wrote his first computer program on this machine: an implementation of tic-tac-toe that allowed users to play games against the computer. Gates was fascinated by the machine and how it would always execute software code perfectly. When he reflected back on that moment, he commented on it and said, "There was just something neat about the machine."[10] After the Mothers Club donation was exhausted, he and other students sought time on systems including DEC PDP minicomputers. One of these systems was a PDP-10 belonging to Computer Center Corporation (CCC), which banned four Lakeside students—Gates, Paul Allen, Ric Weiland, and Kent Evans—for the summer after it caught them exploiting bugs in the operating systemto obtain free computer time.[11] At the end of the ban, the four students offered to debug CCC's software in exchange for free computer time. Rather than use the system via teletype, Gates went to CCC's offices and studied source code for various programs that ran on the system, including FORTRAN, LISP, and machine language. The arrangement with CCC continued until 1970, when it went out of business. The following year, Information Sciences Inc. hired the four Lakeside students to write a payroll program in COBOL, providing them computer time and royalties. After his administrators became aware of his programming abilities, Gates wrote the school's computer program to schedule students in classes. He modified the code so that he was placed in classes with mostly female students. He later stated that "it was hard to tear myself away from a machine at which I could so unambiguously demonstrate success."[12] At age 17, Gates formed a venture with Allen, called Traf-O-Data, to make traffic counters based on the Intel 8008 processor. That first year he made $20,000; however, when his clients discovered his age, business slowed.[13] Gates graduated from Lakeside School in 1973. He scored 1590 out of 1600 on his SATs, the standardized test for college admissions in the United States,[14] and subsequently enrolled at Harvard College in the fall of 1973.[15] While at Harvard, he met his future business partner, Steve Ballmer, whom he later appointed as CEO of Microsoft. He also met computer scientist Christos Papadimitriou at Harvard, with whom he collaborated on a paper about algorithms.[16] He did not have a definite study plan while a student at Harvard, and eventually took a leave of absence in 1975.[17] After Intel released the Intel 8080 CPU, Gates realized that this was the first computer chip which cost less than $200 that could run BASIC, making it the most affordable chip at the time to run inside a personal computer.[18] He figured that this was the only chance he would get to take advantage of the timing, and decided to start a computer software company with Paul Allen.[19] He had talked this decision over with his parents, who were supportive of him after seeing how much Gates wanted to start a software company.
Windows
Gates oversaw Microsoft's company restructuring on June 25, 1981, which re-incorporated the company in Washington and made Gates President of Microsoft and the Chairman of the Board.[21] Microsoft launched its first retail version of Microsoft Windows on November 20, 1985, and in August, the company struck a deal with IBM to develop a separate operating system called OS/2. However, Gates sent out an internal memo on May 16, 1991 announcing that the OS/2 partnership was over and shifting energy to Windows NT kernel development.[29] Gates announced his retirement in June 2006, He officially retired for daily activities at Micorsoft corp. on January 7th 2008.

Creating Custom Boot Floppies

If you have custom drivers or files you want to always have when you create boot disks, copy them to the \Windows\Command\EBD directory.
Then when you want to create a new floppy, run \Windows\Command\Bootdisk.bat
This will format the floppy and copy all the files in the EBD directory.
I like this since I usually add a lot more files than the normal StartUp disk Windows creates.
Deleting the TEMP Directory at Bootup
Submitted 2/21/00
Normally your TEMP directory can fill with .tmp files, files left over from installs etc.An easy way to delete it each time you boot is to add the following lines to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file:

Drvspace=0
Be sure to save the changes, reset the read-only attribute, then reboot.
This does save a significant amount of memory but more importantly, it will reduce the number of threads running in the background.

Increasing Performance

This concerns the "Network Server" option ... You already know about the screw up in Win95 release prior to OSR2 but, did you know you can also customize the settings in the registry?
Open Regedit
Go to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\FS Templates"
Add a new key called "Custom".
Then add two new binary values under that key with the names "NameCache" and "PathCache", just as with the other entries.
I would recommend using values somewhere in-between what the standard values are for "Desktop" and "Network Server". The values I have found to be the best compromise are "00 08 00 00" and "30 00 00 00" respectively, your milage may vary. (2048 filenames and 48 pathnames)
Close Regedit
Right click on "My Computer"
Select Properties then the Performance tab.
Select "File System" and you will now find the "Custom" option in the drop down box.
Select it and click on OK then be sure to reboot.
While this doesn't save a lot of memory, at least your name caches aren't using more than they need.
If you have 24 Megs or more of RAM, you can increase your performance
Right Click on My Computer
Select Properties
Click the Performance tab
Click on File System button
Select Network Server with Full Read-ahead Optimization
If you do not see a performance increase, occasionally the NameCache and PathCache valuesare written to the registry incorrectly for the Network Server. To fix the problem:
Start Regedit
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\FS Templates\Server
Make sure the following values are being used:
PathCache=40 00 00 00
NameCache=a9 0a 00 00
To rename the labels Desktop Computer, Mobile or docking system, or Network Server, see Renaming the File System Profiles

Registry Tips

Allowing Network Access with Blank Passwords (XP and Vista)

Although you can log in locally without a password, by default, WindowsXP Pro does not allow network users to access the computer without a password. Typically you will receive an Unknown error 31 if this is the case.
To change this setting:
Run gpedit.msc
Go to Computer Configuration / Windows Settings / Security Settings / Local Policies / Security Options
Double click on Accounts: Limit local account use of blank passwords to console login only
Disable this option

Disabling the F3 Search Key

If you want to disable the ability to use the F3 key from either the Windows Explorer or Internet Explorer
Start Regedit
Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions
Create a Dword value called NoFindFiles
Give it a value of 1
Reboot

Preventing Changes to File Associations

You can prevent users from changing associations via Windows Explorer's Tools / Folder Options / File Types tab.
Start Regedit
Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ Explore
Create REG_DWORD data type NoFileAssociate
Give it a value of 1

Locking File Associations

If you have your file associations the way you want for a particular file type, you can remove it from the list that gets displayed in the Folder Options / File Types screen
Start Regedit
Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
Scroll to the file association you want to lock.
In the right panel, create a new Binary value
Call it EditFlags
Give it a value of 01 00 00 00
Now when you go to the Folder Options / File Types screen, you won't see that file type listed.

Turning off System Beeps

If you want to turn off all system beeps (like the ones that go through your computers' internal speaker):
Start Regedit
Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Sound
Edit the key Beep and give it a value of No
Download reg file

Changing the Location Of Special Folders

You can modify the registry to change the location of special folders like:
My Documents
Favorites
My Pictures
Personal
Start Regedit
Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
Double click on any locations you want to change and alter the path
Logoff or restart for the changes to go into effect
Note: TweakUI from Microsoft will allow you to make these changes from a dialog box as well

Deleting Specific Registry Value

In a previous tip, Automatically Deleting a Registry Key, it was mentioned how to remove an entire registry key.If you want to simply remove a specific value within a key, use the syntax below:
[Registry Key]"value"=-
For example:
REGEDIT4[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run] "MSConfig"=-
would delete the value MSCONFIG.

Setting the Recycle Bin to Always Delete

You can set the recycle bin to always delete items (like holding down the shift key when dragging files to the recycle bin)
Start Regedit
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ BitBucket
Set the key NukeOnDelete to 1
Download reg file

Setting the Internet Explorer Home Page

If you want to set the home page used by Internet Explorer through the registry
Start Regedit
Go to HKey_Current_User \ Software \ Microsoft \ Internet Explorer \ Main
Give the Start Page key the string value you wish set as homepage

Preparing to Move Hard Drive to Another Computer

To remove the devices from device manager when taking a HD from one computer to another, simply:
Run Regedit
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ and delete the Enum section
This removes all of the hardware specific settings

Comparing Registries

While working with changes to your system, you might want to see what is changing in your Registry.Since you can export it to a text file, the steps are fairly easy
Start Regedit
With the very top level select - My Computer, on the Toolbar select Registry / Export Registry File
I usually save it to the root of the C: drive with the name before (you don't need to add an extension)
Make the change to your system
Go back to Regedit
Press F5 to update it
Export the Registry like step 2
Name the file after and have it go in the same directory
Open up a DOS window
Go to the directory where the two exported files are
Enter FC before.reg after.reg > diff.txt
Then you can edit diff.txt with your favorite text editor.
Note: I do the last steps so often I have a simple batch file already set up.

Setting Excel 2000 High-Contrast Cell Selection

If you want to increase the contrast in selected cells:
Start Regedit
Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Office \ 9.0 \ Excel \ Options
Add a DWORD value call Options6
Give it a value of 16
Now when you select cells, they will be white on black.

Changing Common Icons

You can change many of the common Windows icons.
Start Regedit
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ explorer \ Shell Icons
The default icons are numbered in the right panel from 0-40
Double click on the number of the particular icon you want to change. See the chart below.
Enter the name of the icon file you want to use followed by the number of the icon in that file.Note: The numbering starts with zero.
If you use a single .ICO file, it should be followed by a 0.
e.g. - filename.dll,4 - This would actually be the 5th icon since it starts with 0.
Make sure you delete the hidden file C:\WINDOWS\SHELLICONCACHE
0-13 Are the Drive and Application Icons0 - To change the Unknown Application Icon2 - To change the Default Application Icon3 - To change the Closed Folder Icon4 - To change the Open Folder Icon5 - To change the 5 1/4" Floppy Icon6 - To change the 3 1/2" Floppy Icon7 - To change the Removable Disk Icon8 - To change the Hard Drive Icon9 - To change the Network Drive Online Icon10 - To change the Network Drive Offline Icon11 - To change the CD Drive Icon12 - To change the Ramdrive Icon13 - To change the Entire Network Icon

Prevent Changes to the Start Menu

To prevent any changes to the Start Menu, even a right click:
Start Regedit
Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ Explorer
Add a DWORD called NoChangeStartMenu
Give it a value of 1
Download reg file

Performance Tips

Cleaning the TEMP Directory

One thing that is often overlooked, and can have a negative affect on your computer's performance,
are all the files that are in the TEMP directory. I've had quite a few people ready to get new computers until this was cleaned.

These are easy to clean and slightly different in Win9x and Windows2000 or WindowsXP

Windows98

Open up a DOS prompt

CD \windows\temp (make sure you are in that directory before running the next line.

Run deltree /y *.*

CD \windows

Run del *.tmp (be very careful of the spelling)

Windows2000 / WindowsXP

Go to C:\Documents and Settings\User_Name\Local Settings\Temp (where User_Name is replaced by the person who is logged in)

Delete all the files

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Increasing Memory

If you have Windows95 with only 16-32 megs of memory, you will see a significant increase in performance if you go to at least 64 megs.
Prices have gone down dramatically in the past few years. Your computer won't be swapping to the hard drive nearly as much.

You also need to be aware of the memory requirements of the applications you are using. Office2000 requires a lot more memory than Office97 to get similar performance.

Also, the maximum useful memory for Windows95 is 64 megs. It doesn't do well with memory over that and may actually reduce your performance. Windows98 has removed that bottleneck. .

For Windows2000 I recommend at least 256 megs of memory. I tried it with only 128 megs and noticed quite a difference between Win98 and Windows2000. I currently have 384 megs and am quite pleased with the performance.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Get a Faster Hard Drive

There are hard drives that spin at 7200 RPMs rather than the more common 5400 RPMs.
This means that you will get to your data reasonably faster. They are not that much more expensive and well worth the money.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Defrag the Hard Drive

I do this fairly frequently. Once a month or so. There are a few things I do first to make sure I don't waste time defragging unnecessary files.

First is to delete the Internet Explorer Temporary Files and History.

Second is to delete TMP and BAK files.

Third is delete any files and directories in the \TEMP and \WINDOWS\TEMP directories

Defragment without the swapfile. The instructions for this can be found at Defragmenting the Swap File

Windows98 has a built-in utility called Disk Cleanup. You can run it from either the Start / Programs / Accessories / System Tools / Disk Cleanup or directly run CLEANMGR.EXE

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

File System Settings

If you have 64 megs or more of memory you increase the performance of your system.

Go to Control Panel / System Properties / Performance / File System.

Change the typical role of this computer to Network Server.

If you have Win95 SR1, and you do not see a performance increase, occasionally the NameCache and PathCache values are written to the registry incorrectly for the Network Server. To fix the problem:

Start Regedit

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\FS Templates\Server

Make sure the following values are being used:

PathCache=40 00 00 00

NameCache=a9 0a 00 00

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

No New Floppy Detect

While you are in that section, click on the Floppy Disk tab and uncheck Search for new floppy disks...
This will speed up your boot time.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Increasing Disk Performance

Go to Start \ Settings \ Control Panel \ System \ Performance \ File System \ Troubleshooting

Check the box Disable synchronous buffer commits.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DMA

In the Device Manager, go to the settings your Hard Drives and CD ROMs. If any of them will allow a DMA box to be checked, you can try it. I've seen it decrease my CPU utilization.

For setting DMA in Windows2000 go to Windows2000 Tips

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CONFIG.SYS & AUTOEXEC.BAT Files

Make sure you don't have any unnecessary device drivers or programs here. Windows95 has most you will need already built into the OS.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Removing Unnecessary Programs from Starting Automatically

Many programs add portions of themselves starting automatically on every login.
This can be either in the Startup Folder or the Registry.

One easy way to tell is by looking at how many icons are in your system tray. If you have a large number, perhaps unnecessary resources are being allocated them as well as increasing your boot time.

Typical examples are Microsoft Office, Office FindFast, Real Player, ATI Video setting etc.

You can remove them in one of three main ways:

In the Start / Programs / Startup Folder

In the Registry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Run

If you have Win98, WinME or Windows2000 you can use MSCONFIG to easily remove programs. This is my preference since it allows you to toggle them back on again in case you make a mistake
