Windows XP possesses a utility to tackle this type of problem:

Click on Start/ Run

Enter the following command and click OK

sfc /scannow

Windows file protection dialog box opens and start to analyse the system files.

In case of corrupted files, the cd installation will be required and the files will be replaced by its original version.

Repair with the Windows installation CD.

If the procedure stated below doesn’t help to resolve the problem, there is still the possibility of repairing the files using the installation CD.

Insert the windows installation cd and reboot your system

Installation files will be automatically copiedand you will be prompted if you either want to install a fresh copy of Windows type or if you want to repair(typeon R to repair)

The menu will then ask quick or manual. Choose the quick mode first, if it doesn’t work then try the manual mode.

Reboot your system, and select the install option.

The program will ask you if you wish to repair your installation, click on yes. Note that your system’s data wont be erased , only the system files will be replaced by the original ones.

Whilst the repair is done, change the boot sequence for the original one save and let your system reboot.

The system should work.
